In the Ashanti Region of Ghana, over 1200 Licensed Chemical Sellers (LCS) trained to correctly dose and administer artemisinin-based combination therapy (ACT), and to recognize and refer complicated malaria cases to the nearest health facility. Vietnam no longer requires mass dosing of Zithromax®. However, international partners are working to clear a backlog of trichiasis surgeries before seeking certification of trachoma elimination. In partnership with the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), and RTI Internaional, the International Trachoma Initiative has been working with the government of Nepal since 2002. Pfizer's Global Health Partnership Program: China

Through Global Health Partnerships (GHP), Pfizer is investing $47 million over four years in the growth of 31 promising cancer- and tobacco-control organizations united by the shared mission of accelerating the pace of progress in the fight against cancer. In China, Pfizer is combating both cancer and tobacco by supporting the Cancer Foundation of China, the Shanghai Municipal Center for Disease Control and Prevention (SCDC) and the China Association on Tobacco Control (CATC). The Cancer Foundation of China is building cancer-control capacity and improving cancer-control education for healthcare professionals with a special emphasis on rural areas. The SCDC is improving screening, diagnosis, and referral rates in order to reduce late-stage diagnoses in breast, colorectal, and other common cancers. CATC is converting 60 hospitals to smoke-free status and educating healthcare providers, patients, and family members about the dangers of tobacco. CATC's success has led to the Chinese government's announcement of "Decisions on Smoking Ban Throughout Medical and Healthcare Sector of the Country Starting from 2011" to ban smoking in medical institutions by the end of 2011. Across Asia, Pfizer is addressing both tobacco and cancer control through Global Health Partnerships. The Health Partnerships Institute of Japan is identifying regional disparities in cancer and tobacco control and instituting training and advocacy to address them. Akebono-kai has launched public education and screening campaigns across Tokyo to double the screening rate among women over 40. The Japan Medical Dental Association initiated the Japan Smoking Cessation Training Outreach Project (J-STOP) to coordinate efforts with other associations to train at least 1,000 healthcare providers on best practices in smoking cessation. The American Cancer Society Asia program is providing technical assistance for 11 promising grassroots initiatives in Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand to improve access to and utilization of cancer control services, and to build capacity for early detection and patient support. The Pfizer Foundation funded efforts in communities disproportionately affected by HIV/AIDS in 10 states in the U.S. with high incidence of HIV/AIDS. The St. Hope Foundation in Houston developed new tools to help men and women develop the skills they need to use condoms consistently and focused on high-risk African-American and Latino populations.
